When
to submit?
Its best to start submitting
the website address to the relevant search engines and directories
as soon the website is ready. If the website is still under construction,
many of these search engines and directories will not index the
website.

When
does the Search Engine list the website?
As
soon as you submit to
search engines and directories through the 'add a site' or suggest
an URL' facility,
they give you a message that it has received your submission and
it may be indexed in due course of time. The time duration varies
from search engine to search engine. Some do it online as soon as
you submit and some others might take upto 6 weeks to index the
web site. The
rough time periods are as follows:
Immediate:
1 week: Altavista, Infoseek
1-2 weeks:
Excite, Google,
Hotbot, Inktomi, Lycos, Webcrawler
2-4 weeks: Yahoo, Open Directory

When
do I need to submit updates?
Its
a good idea to resubmit the website address when you update or change
a lot of information on the website. Its not necessary to keep re-submitting
for small changes that are done to the website. Some of the search
engines give weightage for updates to the contents of the website.
What
happens if the website becomes dead?
Many of the major search engines
and directories have automated crawlers to look for dead websites.
These are then deleted from their index.
